Today I got an email from the bank where I have an account. It stated, that starting May 4th, I will have to start paying a monthly service fee. I tried to log into the online banking but it was "temporarily unavailable." How convenient. Of course, I am quite annoyed.
First of all, I like how they give you a prior notification of only 17 days. Shouldn't they be required to give you a longer notification before they change something with your account? It is your money that they are dealing with after all, not theirs.
Second, I did not choose them as my bank. I opened my account with another bank and had it with them for years until they got bought up by this bank. I did not want them as my bank or I would have originally opened up an account with them. But no, I didn't choose them because they suck and always have. Now I'm stuck with them. I had a free checking account with the other bank for years. This bank told us that our accounts would not change after the 'take-over.' BUT THEY LIED. My checking account was free and now they want to tack on a monthly service charge. I would say that they are changing our accounts. Free to being charged. That looks like a change to me.
What exactly is a monthly service charge for anyway? It isn't like they actually service your account in any way. I'm sure it is just technically a "poor person" charge. If I had a lot of money in the account, then I wouldn't get charged a fee. If I don't have much in my account, then I will get charged a fee. So really it shouldn't be called a "monthly service charge" at all. It should be called the "poverty fee." That is really what it is. But here in America, such a thing is perfectly legal, as long as they don't call it what it really is. Those living in poverty get fucked over all the time with extra fees and charges that they damn well can't afford. The banks don't do anything differently with the accounts. So why should a person who lives down to the penny each month have to pay a fee while those who are wealthier get out of paying a fee? It isn't right. Why do those in poverty always end up paying more for everything?
A big bank taking money from poor families for their own profit. Doesn't that just sound so American? Everything is about greed and profit here; no matter how low you have to stoop or who you have to fuck over. I love how big banks and corporations in America are allowed to legally scam people all the time. But god forbid, a regular citizen tried to scam them back. The citizen would go to prison. These kind of practices are what we, Americans, need to be revolting over. They shouldn't be allowed to fuck people over, especially the poor.
I have wanted to change banks ever since I first learned of the take-over, but it is a real hassle and will tie up my money. I can't afford that. My family needs and counts on that money each month. I have multiple direct deposits which would have to be changed. Plus my father would no longer be able to deposit money for me when I need help. Besides, I'm sure my credit is quite shitty since I have had to put my college loans on forbearance for so many years. I probably couldn't open a new account even if I wanted to. Changing banks would be a real hassle and interfere with our getting our money on time. My family is living down to the penny each month. The bank isn't. I will be sending them a nice complaint (not that it will do any good- they are a big bank after all). What else can I do?
